Day 1: Introductions in the Classroom

Today the students arrived at Earl Haig Secondary School. Although students were shy at first, they quickly opened up and interacted with each other. Once in the classroom, students were introduced to the three program officers, three teachers (two junior, one senior), and two student helpers. Water bottles were distributed to each student in order that the students stay hydrated during the day. During lunch, they were able to try new food. Throughout the day, students were able to practice speaking and writing in English.

Students were divided into two classes, one class for the younger students (ages 12-14) and one class for the older students (ages 15-17).

In the junior class, students learned about garbage, recycling, and proper disposal of trash. They also looked through some books to learn about Canadian geography. Students were also given the opportunity to discuss their first impressions of Canada as a group.

The senior class spent time in the classroom getting to know one another through ice breaker games. They also created posters with rules and guidelines for the classroom. Students had some language assessments and did exercises. They wrote about their day in their journals.
